Every precious baby has their own story about entering this world. This blog is about my journey to becoming a mother to Matilda. I have so much admiration for the healing and therapeutic powers of essential oils, they have been incredible for supporting me through my pregnancy, birth and postpartum recovery. Armed with the right mix of oils to help me emotionally, physically, and mentally, this is my story.
My husband Grant and I had a lot of trouble falling pregnant with our first baby. I always knew it was going to be a difficult road after being diagnosed with PCOS and endometriosis. After years of tests, a laparoscopy, and hormone treatments, my gynaecologist had done all he could do to help us. We were looking at IVF when my personal trainer recommended a naturopath. We worked intensively together on the right foods and supplements to nourish my body, and with her help we conceived Maisie. She was born in April 2016. My pregnancy was smooth sailing, only with morning sickness experienced for the first 12 weeks. My membranes ruptured at home at 37 weeks and I went into a spontaneous labour. I opted for an epidural due to the length of labour, but the birth was straight forward. Grant and I cherished out tiny 5 pound bundle. I was terribly sleep deprived for months following the birth of Maisie, but these months were filled with the greatest joy of this long awaited baby.
My endometriosis had gone into remission for the duration of my pregnancy and 12 months breast feeding. This was a welcome break from the intense pain and symptoms experienced from this disease each month. Maisie stopped breast feeding a day after her first birthday. I knew these dreaded symptoms were about to return along with the uncertainty of being able to conceive baby #2. I had pushed these thoughts to the back of the mind for a whole year, it was time to face reality again.
By this time, I had discovered the healing powers of dōTERRA essential oils, and with a clean lifestyle, my heath was better than ever. I had low toxed my home and worked on my nutrition. I was back playing hockey and exercising regularly. I had also started my dōTERRA business. When my monthly cycle returned, they were regular, and my pain was managed well with the use of essential oils. My go to was Geranium, Clary Sage and Cypress. The combination of these oils was all I needed, and the trips to the chemist for pain relief were a thing of the past. I was amazed at how effective they were. I was enjoying my good health; my cup was full, and I fell pregnant a few short months later…
I felt smug that we had managed to conceive baby #2 without much effort. What a contrast to the journey we had with conceiving Maisie. What an incredible blessing!! The first few months were challenging with waves of nausea and food aversions, but thankfully nothing like the severity of my first pregnancy. We celebrated with our families at 14 weeks, and with our close friends shortly after that. We spent 2 weeks in Bali with family when I was 19 weeks pregnant. I had great vitality whist travelling, but upon returning home I became really unwell and ended in hospital for 5 days on an antibiotic and pain medication drip. It was a good reminder at how important modern medicine is, but it had got me thinking about integrated heath solutions. I had waves of guilt that my body had been pumped full of drugs and prayed that it wouldn’t have any affects my precious unborn baby. I had spent years working on my gut health and the thought of nuking the good bacteria was heart breaking, especially whilst pregnant!
As I moved into my third trimester, the aches and pains set it. Insomnia and leg cramps set in. Fatigue set in, I was hot, and could never catch enough rest. I counted down the days until I was ‘term’. Maisie arrived at 37 + 6 weeks, my expectation was that this baby came early too. This time round I had essential oils to help me through the unwanted symptoms of pregnancy, for which I was most grateful! I had these oils at my finger tips to help with relaxation, sleep, mood support, aches and pains, sore and hot feet, stretching skin, heat rash, heart burn, reflux and to boost my immune system naturally. My baby was breech until 37 weeks, but my regular chiro appointments, upside down antics and yoga moves must have paid off? The baby turned, was engaged and ready to go! I was given the green light for a natural birth. Horray!
These oils were beyond magical during this time, but at my 39 week appointment with my doctor I told him I was over it, I was miserable, and I was utterly exhausted. I had been up 12 times the night before to use the bathroom. I wondered how I was ever going to have the energy to give birth. I had googled every symptom in hope that I was displaying an unusual form of pre labour. I was diffusing Clary Sage and applying it to my feet and uterus area, I cooked curries, we drove on bumpy roads and I spend hours walking. The Dr was sympathetic and suggested that they rupture my membranes to get things happening. I went away with this seed planted, I had a way out if I wanted… After all, it would still be considered a natural birth wouldn’t it?
