I am currently awaiting the birth of my second baby. It has been a long summer and the weeks are dragging on, I had expected to be cradling a new baby in my arms by now. Our home is stifling hot. We have evaporative ‘cooling’, although after weeks of hot weather, the system is not able to provide any relief from the heat. It doesn’t even come close.
Sleep. Ha! What’s sleep? Everyone is telling me that my body is preparing for the newborn stage, where sleep is elusive. I am exhausted after chasing the toddler around all day. I have aches and pains. I know this baby is going to be bigger this time. Maisie was born a tiny 5 pounds (2.5kg). My bump is so huge that even my maternity clothing is struggling to keep up, I’m not exaggerating!
Ok, so I’m over it.
Sooo, one thing that I am extremely grateful for is my tool kit of essential oils. Being pregnant, it is limited what we can use on our bodies. Thankfully I have essential oils that I can reach to for supporting discomforts. These essential oils are a beautiful natural solution and super effective to be used through pregnancy, and even birth!
Here are my top 10 dōTERRA oils for Pregnancy!
My first go to is Peppermint. Especially for a summer pregnancy. Peppermint is cooling. I have made a spritzer spray bottle with a few drops of peppermint oil and topped with water. I spray this on the back of my neck, and my legs and feet. The aroma is also very invigorating, it gives me a quick hit of energy. It is also so beautiful massaged into sore hot feet with fractionated coconut oil.
With pregnancy, it brings an added strain on your back. This blend has made a big difference to relieving aches and pains. I like to keep the rub handy, but for added relief I add a few extra drops from the bottle. I apply it to any areas of discomfort. Just be super careful using this around any sensitive areas of your body!
When in doubt, use Frank! I absolutely love Frankincense, the king of oils! I use it in conjunction with lavender, geranium and wild orange mixed with fractionated coconut oil and apply it to my growing belly to prevent stretch marks. I also use a couple of drops under my tongue to help me manage anxious feelings, it is also an amazing oil for boosting your immune system in times of illness.
I had terrible nausea during my first trimester. I found that the blend of oils used in Digestzen were the perfect combination of reducing these unwanted symptoms of pregnancy. I add a drop to a glass of water when feeling nausea. In the later stages I’ve found this blend so helpful for relieving reflux and heartburn!
I absolutely love the uplifting and fresh aroma of the citrus oils. Wild Orange is my favourite, not only do I love the aroma, it uplifts my entire mood. For a quick hit, I add a couple of drops to my hands and inhale. WOW! It is also so beautiful to diffuse in the home. It gives a lovely illusion of having a clean home (even if it isn’t).
I have always had some constriction in my airways, especially during cool nights or exercising. Being pregnant has exasperated this, my lungs are so restricted in the third trimester due to baby taking up a lot of space now. I like to diffuse, apply topically to my chest with fractionated coconut oil or inhale from cupped hands. I never go to bed without my night time ritual of inhaling easy air.
Balance is the grounding blend. Every morning I give myself an aromatic dressing, usually with Balance. I add 5 drops to 10ml of fractionated coconut oil in a little bowl. In large circular sweeping motions, I apply this to every part of my body. I start at my feet and work my way up each leg. This is also a great way to work your lymphatic system.
If I can feel sickness coming on, I get stuck into the onguard ASAP. I apply this to my feet with FCO, I also rub a little over the glads in my throat. I keep a roller bottle of onguard in my bag at all times. It is doubles a low tox sanitiser when out and about. Onguard has the perfect blend of oils for warding off lurgies.
Sleep is very important. I need it to keep up with my energetic toddler. We all need it to function! Lavender, Roman Chamomile, and Cedarwood are also very effective, but I find Vetiver is the big gun when it comes to getting sleep. When I struggle with sleep, I diffuse Vetiver with Lavender and Roman Chamomile. I also apply vetiver behind my ears, on the back of my neck and feet.
When I’m looking for a cold refreshing drink, I love to add a few drops of lemon and lime to a sparling or soda water. Add in some fresh mint leaves. I find this a great way of staying hydrated, and an alternative to a sugar filled refreshment. Lime also has so many added health benefits!
Two essential oils that aren’t recommended during pregnancy are Clary Sage and Jasmin, it’s best to avoid these.
I can’t wait to experience child birth again and to hold my precious baby for the first time. We look forward to introducing baby to you very soon!
